We taste

candied plum, blackberry, milk chocolate

...in this coffee.

With a slow start to arrivals from Ethiopia, we are now starting to see a lot of amazing gems gracing our cupping table and this natural from Ismael Aredo is one of them. The farm, Kayon Mountain, is a large 500 hectare piece of land run by Ismael and his family who employ 25 permanent full time staff, and 300 seasonal employees. There are many ways in which the Aredo family supports the local community, including free transportation, financial support for schools and administrative buildings.

Not only are the Aredos doing great things for the community but they are clearly doing great things with coffee. This natural impressed with lots of dark fruit complexity while maintaining a wonderfully clean cup profile. Fresh off the grind we are smelling an array of fruits like plum and berries. A lovely candied plum note predominates in the cup as well and is joined by notes of blackberry, dark cherry and milk chocolate. If you like naturals with lots of dark fruit expression, this one is for you!

We buy, roast, and sell coffee. On a surface level, this sounds simple enough. But buying coffee in a way we are proud of and in a way that those who buy our coffee are proud of is often complex, challenging, and hard work. We find ourselves on a continuum of buying and selling that progresses towards more sustainable, meaningful and equitable relationships. The chart below provides basic information for each lot on where we are on this journey.
