Just when we thought we'd brought in our last coffee from Ecuador from this year's harvest, we received a sample set from Juan Peña's farm, Hacienda La Papaya. Let's just say we were pleasantly impressed. It is no wonder baristas from all over the US have used coffees from Hacienda La Papaya to compete with in the US barista and roasting championships - with multiple 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes!
We were delighted to be able to bring in this particular selection - a typica variety that was naturally processed. It is clear just looking at and smelling the green un-roasted seeds, that great care was taken processing these gems. Each seed is uniform in size and color, and the green smells pleasantly fruity without the off notes of vinegar or overripe fruit.
And the roasted results are absolutely stunning! Fresh off the grind we are smelling red wine, tootsie rolls and a lovely perfumed sweetness. Flavors in the cup range from dark fruits like blackberry and plum, tropical fruits like guava, and a rich chocolatey middle tone to balance this more fruit forward selection. If you love naturally processed coffees, this just might be your top coffee for 2021!
