Meet the Producer:

Macario Garcia

Recently, we had the privilege of visiting Macario and his farm, Agua de Niño for the first time. Like any first visit, you don’t know exactly what to expect and we were surprised, in great ways, by a number of things.

When Macario’s first sample came across our table, there was a lot of wowing going on. This sample turned into a no brainer – for sure we needed to purchase this lot and get to know about Macario. Immediately, Macario’s coffee became a favorite offering here at Sweet Bloom.

Recently, we had the privilege of visiting Macario and his farm, Agua de Niño for the first time. Like any first visit, you don’t know exactly what to expect and we were surprised, in great ways, by a number of things.

First, we were struck by the fact that no other roaster had ever visited his farm. Until recently, Macario sold his coffee to “coyotes”, middlemen, who buy and often sell farmer’s lots for disproportionately more than what they pay the farmer. But in the last few years, Caravela Importers has worked to create a much more sustainable and equitable relationship with Macario and surrounding producers in the community. We are honored to be part of this more equitable transaction.

Second, we were surprised to find that Macario does all of the de-pulping of his coffee with a hand cranked de-pulper. This is true of a lot of farmers that grow coffee in Oaxaca – they stick to more traditional and artisan ways of processing coffee. Our perspective is, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, but wow, it is hard to imagine removing the pulp of the entire harvest with a simple hand cranked machine.

Finally, we are honored and humbled by the fact that we are able to purchase all of the coffee from his farm. Macario’s dedication to his craft is truly special. The quality of his coffee is stunning and most likely will only get better in years to come with the support of Caravela’s agronomists. Whenever Mario’s coffee is on our offering, you don’t want to miss out – you’ll be drinking some of the best coffee Mexico has to offer.
