We taste

lavender, peach, honey

...in this coffee.

Buku Sayisa is a washing station located in the highlands of Guji. In Amharic, Buku Sayisa means “blessed valley” and no doubt, this special lot is a blessing to our taste buds.  Around 450 small plot farmers bring their harvests from the surrounding hillsides sitting at elevations of 2100 – 2300 masl. The elevation, combined with careful processing and heirloom varieties from the motherland of coffee lead to one of the best washed coffees we’ve tasted this year.

We have our friend Yoni Girmai to thank for this special selection and look forward to building our relationship with this budding importer.

Fresh off the grind we are smelling intense florals like lavender and jasmine.  In the cup, stone fruit notes like peach predominate and are joined by a lovely honeyed sweetness and lemon-lime like acidity. Sweet, balanced, peachy and honeyed – truly beautiful coffee in every way. Enjoy!

We buy, roast, and sell coffee. On a surface level, this sounds simple enough. But buying coffee in a way we are proud of and in a way that those who buy our coffee are proud of is often complex, challenging, and hard work. We find ourselves on a continuum of buying and selling that progresses towards more sustainable, meaningful and equitable relationships. The chart below provides basic information for each lot on where we are on this journey.
